Running a stop sign or not respecting the continuous line are two very frequent offences that cause numerous accidents. In order to control these behaviours, the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) is already testing two systems that monitor drivers by means of cameras. How do these new speed cameras for the stop sign and the continuous line work?
This is how the Stop radar works
Did you know that 1,093 of the drivers involved in accidents with victims had not respected a stop sign? These are data from 2021, the last year with complete statistics from the DGT. To this figure should be added the many stop-jumps that did not lead to an accident. For this reason, the DGT has implemented a camera control of junctions regulated by stop signs, as explained in the latest issue of the magazine ‘Tráfico y Seguridad Vial’.
The fine for running a stop sign is 200 euros and four points deducted from your driving licence.
Not respecting the unbroken line: this is how it is controlled
When we see a solid line on a road, or on any type of road, it means that it cannot be passed because doing so poses a risk of a lateral collision. Even so, many drivers do not respect this rule, resulting in 41 deaths due to this type of crash and a total of 8,163 accidents (data from 2021).

The DGT is working to reduce this figure and avoid casualties by using technology. In this case, the system uses two cameras to monitor vehicles travelling on merging lanes and the right lane of the main road into which they are merging. Monitoring is carried out by means of photographs. As they explain in the magazine, “when a vehicle is detected, in a sequence of a few metres, in the acceleration lane and then, without having finished the continuous line, in the right lane of the main road, the conclusion is obvious”: there has been a breach of the continuous line which entails a fine of 200 euros (without withdrawal of points). The Automated Complaint Processing Centre receives the photographs, verifies their veracity and processes the sanction.

“Both the stop sign and the continuous line radars are in the testing phase. After testing its operation and effectiveness, it will be extended throughout Spain.
